Astronomer, Hayden Planetarium; NICAP investigator

SCIENTIST

Walter N. Webb (born 1932) is an American astronomer, lecturer, and former investigator for the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). He served as a staff astronomer at Boston’s Hayden Planetarium for over three decades and became one of the most respected civilian analysts of UFO reports.

Webb was assigned by NICAP to investigate the Betty and Barney Hill abduction case shortly after it emerged in 1961. He conducted lengthy interviews with the Hills, reviewed Dr. Benjamin Simon’s hypnosis tapes, and produced a comprehensive 295‑page report that concluded the couple was “telling the truth and the incident probably occurred exactly as reported.” Webb’s meticulous analysis helped establish the Hill case as a landmark in UFO studies and demonstrated the value of scientific methodology in civilian UFO research.
