Varginha UFO Incident (1996)

January 20, 1996Varginha, Minas Gerais, BrazilAlleged entity encounter and military retrieval

The Varginha incident of January 20, 1996, is Brazil's most famous alleged entity encounter and is considered by many researchers to be one of the most significant UAP events of the 1990s. It involved the reported sighting of one or more non-human entities by at least six witnesses in and around the city of Varginha, Minas Gerais, followed by alleged military retrieval of entities and craft debris, and the reported death of one or more military personnel allegedly connected to the operation.

The incident reportedly began in the early morning hours of January 20, when multiple witnesses claimed to have seen a crashed or disabled craft in an area west of Varginha. At approximately 3:30 PM, three young women — sisters Liliane and Valquíria Fátima Silva, and their friend Kátia Andrade Xavier — encountered what they described as a strange creature crouching near a wall in a public area. They described the entity as approximately 1.6 meters tall (5'3"), dark-skinned, with a large head, three protuberances on top of its head, large red eyes, and an oily skin texture. The creature appeared to be injured or ill.

Following the civilian sightings, the Brazilian Army's 2nd Infantry Regiment based in Campanha and the local VAFAB air base are alleged to have conducted operations in Varginha, capturing at least one and possibly two living entities. One Military Police officer, Marco Eli Chereze, who reportedly participated in handling one of the captured entities, died of health complications on February 15, 1996, approximately three weeks after the incident. His family and local physicians reportedly believed his death was connected to contact with the entity.

Key Witnesses

  • Liliane Fátima Silva and Valquíria Fátima Silva: Sisters who gave the most detailed entity description; consistently maintained their accounts for decades.
  • Kátia Andrade Xavier: Companion of the Silva sisters during the entity encounter.
  • Marco Eli Chereze: Military Police corporal who allegedly participated in capturing an entity and died three weeks later.
  • Eurico de Freitas and Oralina de Freitas (husband and wife): Farmers who reported seeing the craft in their garden the morning of January 20.

Analysis and Debate

Pro-UAP arguments: Multiple independent civilian witnesses in different locations reported consistent descriptions. Military activity in the area on the day of the incident has been confirmed by some local sources. The death of Officer Chereze shortly after alleged entity contact is circumstantially suggestive. Brazilian researcher Dr. Roger Leir conducted physical examinations of the sisters and reportedly found unusual physiological markers. Brazilian UFO researcher A.J. Gevaerd has conducted extensive on-the-ground investigation over decades.

Skeptical arguments: No physical evidence of a craft or entities has been publicly produced. The entity descriptions share characteristics with known entertainment media (the creature resembles entities from the film "E.T." and popular culture depictions). Officer Chereze's death was attributed to leptospirosis (a bacterial infection) by official medical reports, not to alien contact. Brazilian military and government officials have denied any incident occurred. The three witness women were teenagers at the time, and memory reliability across decades is uncertain.

Editorial Note: The Varginha case remains hotly contested. The witness accounts are consistent across decades but lack corroborating physical evidence. The military denial and the official medical explanation for Officer Chereze's death complicate the narrative.
