Primary witness to Lakenheath-Bentwaters radar-visual incident
Technical Sergeant Forrest D. Perkins, USAF (retired), served as Watch Supervisor at the Radar Air Traffic Control Center (RATCC) at RAF Lakenheath on the night of August 13-14, 1956, when the famous Lakenheath-Bentwaters UFO incident occurred. His detailed account forms the primary source for much of the established narrative of this case.
During the events, Perkins and his team tracked multiple unidentified radar returns exhibiting extraordinary performance. When two RAF de Havilland Venom interceptors were scrambled, Perkins coordinated with both U.S. and British personnel as the objects were tracked on ground radar and pursued by the aircraft. One of the most dramatic moments came when an interceptor pilot reported that the object had circled behind him—an account corroborated by radar data.
In 1968, more than a decade after the incident, Perkins wrote directly to the University of Colorado's UFO Project (the Condon Committee) providing a detailed letter describing the events. His testimony proved crucial: the Condon Report classified the case as "unexplained," making it one of the few cases the officially skeptical committee could not dismiss.
Perkins' account has been cited in numerous books, documentaries, and academic analyses of the Lakenheath-Bentwaters incident. His willingness to go on record and provide technical details about the radar tracking has made him a key figure in validating this as one of the most credible radar-visual UFO cases in history.
