Major General John Samford

Director of Intelligence, US Air Force

MILITARY

Major General John Samford served as Director of Intelligence, US Air Force. As Director of Air Force Intelligence from 1951 to 1956, Samford oversaw the early years of Project Blue Book, the Air Force's official UFO investigation program. On July 29 1952, he held a historic press conference at the Pentagon addressing the Washington D.C. UFO wave—the largest such press conference since World War II. Samford stated that while most sightings could be explained as misidentifications, a small percentage remained unexplained and warranted continued investigation.

Samford's tenure marked a shift toward more systematic documentation of UFO reports, laying groundwork for later official inquiries. After retiring from the Air Force in 1960, he served as Deputy Director of the National Security Agency (1960‑1962).
